Reconstruction Therapy

nativa & cultured gingiva

Reconstructive surgery often requires soft tissue grafting in order to close large or difficult wounds lining oral cavities. Reconstructive surgery within the oral cavity is required after tumor excision, cleft palate repair, trauma, repair of diseased tissue and for generating keratinized soft tissue around teeth and dental implants. Currently, soft tissue grafting in the form of split thickness autograft or autograft flaps derived from mucosa are the most commenly used means of correcting relatively large oral defects, which cannot be closed by primary or secondary intention healing. The major drawback of using mucosa as autograft material is the limited amount of donor tissue available, and the fact that a second wound is created at the donor site. Our custom designed tissue engineered grafts are aimed at:

  1. reparing damaged or
  2. replacing missing tissue within the oral cavity and
  3. optimal epithelial regeneration

Until now, autologous full-thickness grafts are still in clinical development. There are no products on the market with this approach. Mucosa BV develops tissue engineered autologous full-thickness grafts. This is possible because of the development of patented break through tissue engineering methods that allow the production of succesful grafts at an industrial scale.
